In 15 years of operation, the Retired Racehorse Project has made a measurable impact on the Thoroughbred, bridging the gap between the racing and equestrian industries to champion the breed as an equine athlete. Through its core tenets of education, inspiration and service, the RRP increases demand for Thoroughbreds beyond racing.
You need only look at the over 5,000 horses that have been directly impacted by our programming, the increase in value for Thoroughbreds upon retirement from racing – $1,570 in 2016 to $3,067 in 2024 – or the hundreds of pieces of content we’ve produced for our free educational offerings to see the measure of our impact. The work of the RRP within the aftercare space has started a movement back to the Thoroughbred as a sport horse — and when more equestrians choose the Thoroughbred, every horse becomes a winner.
Former connections cheer their horses home at the Thoroughbred Makeover. Volunteers dedicate their time and energy to helping to produce events. Aftercare professionals network at RRP programs. Horses find quality homes beyond racing through RRP programming and services. And more equestrians than ever are discovering the Thoroughbred breed as the ultimate partner.
But there’s more work to be done: the RRP has its sights set on expanding its services and programming in areas of need, positioned to unveil a new strategic plan in early 2026. Will you join our community on behalf of the Thoroughbred?
Your support helps us continue to educate, empower, and inspire equestrians to get involved with Thoroughbreds beyond racing.
